Rye Straw Marquetry & Solid Oak Panel
There is a quiet rhythm to rye straw marquetry, and this decorative panel is a direct reflection of that process.
Every stem of straw was individually split, flattened, and laid by hand to create this geometric chevron pattern. Because straw contains natural silica, the surface catches the ambient light, creating a soft shimmer that shifts in tone throughout the day and from different viewing angles, all without the need for varnishes or artificial finishes.
The marquetry rests on a foundation of solid oak. To ensure materials are respected and nothing in the workshop goes to waste, this oak was intentionally saved and repurposed from the offcuts of larger freestanding furniture projects.
Concealed wall fasteners on the back give you the flexibility to hang the panel with the chevron pattern pointing either upward or downward, depending on how the light and lines best suit your space. Whether mounted on a wall or simply resting on a shelf, it is designed to bring the warmth of natural materials and the tactile details of traditional craft into a room.
It is a true artisan-crafted statement piece.
Material: Solid oak wood & colored rye straw from Burgundy (France)
About Rye Straw Marquetry
Rye straw marquetry is a centuries-old decorative art that originated in Europe, particularly in France, during the 17th century. At the time, clergymen, sailors, and even prisoners used straw to embellish furniture, boxes, and wall panels.
Although this craft was set aside for many years, it experienced a revival during the Art Deco movement of the early 20th century. Renowned designers such as Jean-Michel Frank and André Groult brought straw marquetry back to prominence, showcasing its luminous textures and modern elegance.
Today, rye straw marquetry is celebrated for its natural shimmer, intricate beauty, and unique ability to transform everyday objects into extraordinary works of art. It remains a rare and highly valued craft, combining tradition, artistry, and timeless design
