One Time Rye Straw Marquetry Workshop - Level 2

What Is Rye Straw Marquetry?
Rye straw marquetry is a decorative technique that involves using carefully cut and arranged pieces of colored rye straw to create intricate designs and patterns. It was born in Europe, and especially France, during the 17th century when clergymen, sailors and prisoners, used straw to decorate boxes, furniture, murals, etc. Put aside for many years, straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators such as Jean-Michel Frank and André Groult returned this art to its former glory. It is highly valued for its intricate beauty and ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art, like this Art Deco piece I built.
What Will I Do During the Workshop?
Objective of the Workshop
Building on the skills learned in Level 1, this workshop introduces a more advanced method of rye straw marquetry used to create precise and intricate geometric patterns.
You will learn how to:
-
Create an “aplat” by gluing prepared rye straw side by side onto a paper backing to form a continuous sheet.
-
Cut the prepared straw sheets accurately and reassemble the pieces to create more complex geometric designs, such as chevron patterns.
-
Work with the direction of the straw to play with light, contrast and movement within your design.
-
Transfer and assemble your finished pattern onto the final substrate.
-
Apply these techniques to a small decorative or functional object of your choice.
As with Level 1, the workshop is also about enjoying the process: slowing down, working with your hands and exploring the almost endless possibilities offered by this beautiful natural material.
What You Go Home With
You will choose from a selection of objects to decorate during the workshop, such as a pendant, earrings, bookmark or small box.
You will leave with your finished piece and, more importantly, with a new technique that will allow you to move beyond simple patterns and begin creating more intricate rye straw marquetry designs of your own.
If Level 1 left you wanting more, Level 2 may have you completely hooked.
