Art Deco Chest with Rye Straw Marquetry

This Art Deco–inspired chest was commissioned by client who had long dreamed of owning a piece decorated with straw marquetry. The natural sheen of straw catches the light, creating depth and a subtle interplay of texture that elevates the surface beyond traditional veneer. While my client had a clear vision for a classic art-deco sunburst design, I suggested adding a 3D detail at the base, inspired by French master Lison de Caunes work and who reimagined 18th-century the cube sans fond parquetry pattern and extended it into new visual illusions. The result is a surface that feels both timeless and contemporary, reflecting the precision and artistry of traditional craftsmanship with a modern twist.
