What Is Rye Straw Marquetry ?

Rye straw marquetry is a decorative technique that involves using carefully cut and arranged pieces of colored rye straw to create intricate designs and patterns. It was born in Europe, and especially France, during the 17th century when clergymen, sailors and prisoners, used straw to decorate boxes, furniture, murals, etc. Put aside for many years, straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators such as Jean-Michel Frank and André Groult returned this art to its former glory. It is highly valued for its intricate beauty and ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art.
